The Singapore National Eye Centre Oculoplastic, Orbital and Lacrimal Service

 

Availability of Fellowships and Observerships

One local and one overseas fellowship position is available per year. Observers are welcomed and do not have to pay a fee.

Experience Required

Applicants must have completed the ophthalmology residency program in their country. Any prior experience in Oculoplastics is not compulsory but will be regarded favorably.

Duration of Fellowship

12 to 18 months, applicants usually receive confirmation of acceptance 6 to 12 months before commencement of the fellowship. An online interview over the internet is mandatory.

Future Endeavors after Fellowship Training

Applicants must outline definite plans for their careers after fellowship training and present them during the interview. The intention of the Centre is to train Oculoplastic surgeons who will subsequently contribute to the public health care sector of their respective home countries.

Curriculum

The program will provide advanced training in the medical and surgical aspects of diseases of the ocular adnexae, orbit and lacrimal system. There are also opportunities for exposure to peri-ocular aesthetic procedures and surgeries. A detailed hand-out of the SNEC Oculoplastic Fellowship program can be obtained through correspondence from the Centre.

Surgical Numbers

The surgical numbers illustrated (Annex A and B) will give potential applicants an idea of what to expect on the basis of our previous experience training fellows. It is not meant to be a guarantee of any sort with regards to the number of surgeries fellows will perform during their fellowship year.

Surgical Exposure

The fellow will be attached to a consultant for all sessions in the operating theatre (OT). For most procedures, he/she will first observe and assist a minimum number of surgeries before proceeding to perform a part of the surgery, or the whole operation under supervision.

Timetable

The weekly schedule for the fellow will comprise of:

3 OT sessions
3 Oculoplastic clinic sessions
1 session for research and administrative work

*Each session is for half a working day

Educational Programs and Research

The fellow will play a significant role in taking charge of all academic grand rounds, radiology rounds, clinic-pathological conferences and journal clubs. It is a requirement to publish at least one paper in a peer-reviewed journal during the course of the fellowship year.
